Think whatever you like, but don’t try and tell me that this is anything more than a guy being happy for his best friend. Because that’s what, and all, he is. He’s happy. He’s smiling. But he only does it for her, because of her, because she needs and deserves it. He decides that maybe things are better this way, that she might be supposed to be with the other guy. Maybe he deserves her more, maybe he’s better for her. So, maybe he needs to move on and let her go, which is what he’s doing. He’s not jealous, though he’s still a little sore from the way they ended. But he thinks that he might not be what she needs, and that maybe he should settle for being the best friend she knew so well before they ever crossed the line from friends to something more. Maybe he needs to take the back seat and let her live, be happy, and find someone who won’t run, who understands her better, though he’s actually the one who does, he just doesn’t know it. Maybe he should just smile, and be happy, for her, and ignore the way his stomach turns when he’s reminded of the way he’d thought that this could be them. That she would be his, that she would marry him. But he’s not that guy. He doesn’t organise flashmobs, or go to church or tell someone he loves them after a month of dating. He hides, behind a smile and a nod of acceptance. Because he does, he accepts it. He’s accepting that maybe she’s moved on, that she’s happy, that he has to be happy for her. He’s accepting the fact that she isn’t his, that maybe she never was in the first place, and that maybe she was always meant to end up with the other guy. He’s a coward though, because he smiles even though he’s really breaking inside, and if you look closely enough you’ll know what I mean. You can see it. See him learning to be the bigger person. Because you only let someone be happy even though it hurts when you truly love them, when the only thing you want to see is their smile. And maybe, if it’s true love, whatever you set free will come back to you. Maybe. And she does.
